You don't need a massive IT department to dramatically improve your company's cybersecurity. These five basics should be part of every small-business technology plan.
Cybersecurity can sound intimidating.
For a small business, however, some of the most important protections are surprisingly straightforward.
1. Use multi-factor authentication.
Passwords alone aren't enough. Enable MFA on email, cloud applications, financial accounts and administrator accounts.
2. Keep systems updated.
Software updates frequently contain security fixes. Delaying updates increases the window in which known vulnerabilities can be exploited.
3. Back up important data.
Backups should be protected from the systems being backed up. If ransomware can encrypt the backup, it isn't much of a backup.
4. Train employees.
Phishing remains one of the easiest ways for attackers to gain access to an organization. Employees should know how to recognize suspicious messages and where to report them.
5. Know what is connected to your network.
Routers, cameras, printers, computers, phones and IoT devices can all create security risks.
Fort Worth's own technology environment makes cybersecurity particularly important. The city's economy includes defense, aerospace, healthcare, logistics and other industries where sensitive information can have significant value.
The city has also identified cybersecurity improvements as part of its own technology priorities.
